Slow Day

I had off from both jobs. I still have a sinus infection. I have the chills. Yuck.

I saved up my calories for HBFD (Hot Bunch For Dinner), my weekly outing for spicy food with a bunch of friends I met via the TREX BBS. We've been doing this for over a decade. We rotate through a medium-sized set of restaurants that include Thai, Ethiopian, Mexican, Chinese (several types of cuisine), Italian, and Indonesian restaurants. As one of the guys put it, "Yes, we're in a rut, but oh what a wonderful rut it is."

We were supposed to go to Su's Mongolian BBQ in Santa Clara, but this week's announcement was sent out late, the party was small, and then half the party was still stuffed from a late Indian buffet lunch. This left only two of us, and it's absurd to have just two people at an HBFD (the smallest we've ever had was four; any fewer and we call it off). Unfortunately, Warren had already started cooking his (uck) dinner, and I didn't find out dinner was off until I arrived at "Trex Central" (the home of the guy who owns the computers that run the BBS).

I still wanted hot food, so I drove to my favorite taqueria, Burrito Real, and ordered up a mole burrito with the hottest salsa they had. I took it home, ate it, and boy did that feel good!

Warren's dinner is just getting ready now (I didn't know he started it late), so he's eating his "meat loaf" as I type this. His "meat loaf" recipe:

Take one pound of beef out of the freezer and defrost it.

Put the whole thing into a roaster pan filled about 1/2" with water.

Cover and bake at 450F for 1.5 hours.

Remove from roaster pan, put onto plate, and douse heavily with ketchup to cover the flavor and texture.

Needless to say, I avoid his cooking whenever possible. The dog would eat it, but she'd eat almost anything with meat in it.

Warren says he wants to do dessert -- ice cream -- so I'm holding off on undressing for bed. It's a little cold for ice cream, but it'd feel nice on my throat, too, and I've got enough calories left today I can get away with it.
